The Yashiro Japanese Gardens is the culmination of 7 years of planning on work, which is a joint effort of the Olympia-Yashiro Cister City Association & the City of Olympia. The gardens are symbolic of the ties between Olympia & Yashiro, Japan. The dedication took place in May of 1990, after a 2 year construction effort with 75 volunteers. The gardens are located at 1010 Plum Street SE in Olympia. It is located on a modest three-quarters acre of land.
The park’s designer, Robert Murase, defines a true Japanese garden as ‘a visionary expression about our connectedness to nature and earth.’ Specific placement of plants, water, and other objects in the garden carry a message of the land’s stewardship, religious thought, friendship, nature, and cultural exchange and understanding.
According to A T. on Yelp: “What's fun about this garden is that it's a hidden gem, openly tucked away near the heart of Olympia. I lived by it for a few years before becoming aware of it and eventually checking it out. Despite being close to two major roads and a gas station, the environment is peaceful, quiet and still. One can hear the water of the fountain splash into the murky koi pond, and look at the large fish. This place is very small though and takes but a few minutes to stroll through completely - best suited for slow moving folks or perhaps meditation. Cool statues, and small but nice trails make this place memorable and fun. ”
These gardens are a nice place to check out, and is truly a ‘hidden gem’ in the Olympia city area. It is a place that you can go to calm down, relax, and meditate, if you choose to do so. The gardens are always open, at all times of the day.
