Thurston County sits at the heart of Western Washington, known for its mix of natural beauty, thriving communities, and rich history.
Olympia, the state capital, anchors the county and offers cultural attractions, government institutions, and a vibrant local economy. Surrounding towns like Tumwater, Lacey, and Yelm each provide their own character — from historic landmarks to family-friendly neighborhoods and outdoor recreation.
Residents enjoy access to Puget Sound, the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, and miles of hiking trails in nearby Capitol State Forest. The county’s strong balance of urban convenience and rural charm makes it one of the most desirable places to live and work in the Pacific Northwest.
The Nisqually Wildlife Refuge is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Thurston County.
Located just outside Olympia, this 3,000-acre preserve protects estuary and wetlands where the Nisqually River meets Puget Sound. Visitors can walk the elevated boardwalks stretching deep into the tidal flats, offering breathtaking views and incredible opportunities for birdwatching.
With more than 200 species of birds documented, it’s a year-round attraction for families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
The refuge is named in honor of Billy Frank Jr., a Nisqually tribal leader and environmental activist, adding cultural and historical importance to the experience.
Just west of Olympia, Capitol State Forest spans more than 100,000 acres of public land and is a year-round playground for outdoor recreation.
Hikers enjoy miles of trails leading to scenic overlooks, while mountain bikers and horseback riders make use of dedicated routes that wind through old-growth stands and dense evergreens.
In the warmer months, the forest is ideal for camping and picnicking, and during hunting season, it’s a well-known spot for sportsmen across the South Sound.
With easy access from Olympia and Tumwater, it’s one of Thurston County’s best options for a quick escape into the outdoors.
Located near Littlerock, the Mima Mounds are a National Natural Landmark and one of the most unique outdoor attractions in Thurston County.
The prairie landscape is covered with thousands of mysterious earth mounds, some several feet tall, spread evenly across the terrain. Geologists have debated their origin for decades, and their formation remains one of
Washington’s natural mysteries. Visitors can explore interpretive trails, learn about the habitat, and enjoy wildflower blooms in spring and summer.
The preserve combines hiking, education, and sightseeing in a setting you won’t find anywhere else in the Pacific Northwest.
